Made for a baby girl, the fabric is Liberty cotton in the Navy Blue Fish print — hundreds of tiny fish drifting freely across a deep navy ground, full of movement and quiet charm. At the neckline and cap sleeves, white piping frames the dress with a crispness that makes the navy deepen and the embroidery glow.

Look closely and you realise the smocking and the embroidery are not two separate things, they are one. The rows of gathered pleats, worked across the bodice, form a rippling expanse of waves. And swimming through them, stitched one by one by our artisans, are fish: pink, blue, olive, golden. Each one different, each one placed with intention, as though they were always meant to be exactly there.

This work is done by our artisans: mothers and grandmothers across Europe, who receive the dresses at home and embroider each one by hand — sometimes gathering together with laughter and purpose, knowing that what they are creating will be treasured, passed down and worn again.
